Life in the fast lane has not prevented people for stopping by to read that 'unputdownable' best-seller or a light lifestyle magazine. Whoever thought that the written word was dying a slow death thanks to the emerging hectic lifestyles, the internet and the influx of the electronic media - think again! For, even in this SMS world, people still connect easily with works of O'Henry or a Tolstoy, Jeffery Archer, Paulo Coelho or an Arundhati Roy.
They also have time to read newspapers, magazines and self help books.
Vishal Soni, a marketing executive, says, "I prefer short stories as the whole plot is compact and you don't have to wait 200 pages for the climax. Novels interest me, but maintaining continuity is difficult due to my hectic work schedules."Agrees Deepal Bhatt, a pharmacist, "Short stories are my choice as they make you think, yet you can finish them in an hour." Of course there are many takers for the longer version of the story. Mihir Baraiya, who doesn't mind spending hours reading novels, reveals, "I am addicted to novels to such an extent that I can't fall asleep without reading one."Agrees Jigar Brahmbhatt, a software engineer, "Intellectual thrillers are my favourite. When so many people all over the world spend hours reading 300-page thrillers, they must be worth reading."
But the segment that rules the day is still the lifestyle oriented magazines. Himanshu Shah, book-in-charge of an Ahmedabad based bookstore, says, "People are interested in gathering information and magazines provide insights into current on goings as well as lifestyle issues. They also appeal to the masses and give information in a flashy package." Paras Vyas, a corporate honcho, states, "Reading magazines provides the much needed relief from my high pressure job. Unlike novels which are filled with long-winding descriptions, magazine reports of features are short and sweet." Seems the saas-bahu saga's and internet blog sites are still in for some tough competition. ahmedabadtimes@timesgroup.com
